Grand Exchange Tax

RuneScape has added a 1% tax on every sale that takes place on the Grand Exchange. Any item that is sold through the G.E system will be subjected to the tax. It will be deducted from the starting sale price. The tax is basically applied on a per-item basis. For instance, if you’re selling multiple items, the tax will be applied depending on every item sold, instead of the total amount received.

The interface of the Grand Exchange has also been changed to show the pay you’ll be paying on every item. You can also track the amount while viewing the offers of any sale. In simpler words, if you’re a seller, you’ll always be able to view it at the bottom line of the opened interface.

Any item that is sold under 100 GP will not be taxed, so they won’t likely be displayed on the bottom line of the interface. Any item that is sold for over 4,999,999,999 GP will have a capped tax of 5,000,000 GP shown on the interface.

The player-to-player trade menus have also been updated. The ‘Accept’ button on the interface is prevented from being pushed for a few seconds after you change/switch the items in the trade. It gives both parties a chance to spot if they’re being scammed.

Here’s a list of items that are exempted from the tax system. Most of them are total that are used and often bought by newcomers –

Chisel, Dibber, Gardening Trowel, Glassblowing Pipe, Hammer, Needle, Pestle and Mortar, Rake, Saw, Secateurs, Shears, Spade, and Watering Can (0). Bonds are also exempted from the tax system as there is already a fee used to convert the item from non-tradeable to tradeable.

Item Sink

The Item Sink system developed by RuneScape helps with inflation through the tax collected from the sales to buy expensive items from the seller. Once the trade is successfully completed, the items are then deleted.

When a taxed trade has taken place at the Grand Exchange, the taxes paid are consigned to a coffer. An automated system then uses those stored funds to purchase various items chosen by the RuneScape team. The system buys the items based on the EST quantity that is entering the game on a daily basis. It’s basically the amount the owner would like to reduce so that the eco remains stable.

There are various things that can occur when a player opens a sell offer for one of those items –

If the coffer’s stored funds are below the item’s value, the system won’t interfere, and the sale offer is created as normal.
